One Step Away: Watch our first national PSA
This Fourth of July, America celebrated 250 years. For the families of Highland Park — and for survivors of mass shootings everywhere — the holiday carries a different weight.
Four years after a gunman opened fire on our town’s Independence Day parade, we’re proud to share our first national PSA under our new name: One Step Away (formerly the Highland Park Peace Project).

Despite blood on our streets and in our schools, time and time again, our political leaders in Washington, D.C. haven’t been moved enough to act. Not after Sandyhook, Las Vegas, Parkland, Uvalde, or Highland Park. And that’s why instead of waiting on lawmakers who’ve ignored 63% public support for an assault weapons ban, we’re taking matters into our own hands–and your hands too–by exposing the companies that keep these gun manufacturers profitable: the retailers, accountants, and financial institutions standing one step away from them.
Before your next purchase, check the scorecard to see whether your money supports heroes or enablers in the gun industry’s supply chain.
Last week, the Chicago Tribune covered that work. They detailed how our research team grades hundreds of companies as “heroes” or “enablers” based on their ties to the five largest assault weapon manufacturers — Smith & Wesson, Sturm Ruger, Bushmaster, Daniel Defense, and Sig Sauer. As co-founder Dan Perlman put it:
“[Our database] has created transparency; what we’ve created has now allowed corporations and consumers to ask for accountability.”
The piece doesn’t shy away from the pushback, either — a Lake County Board member called our approach “misguided” — which tells you that we’re on to something big.

None of this — the research behind our scorecard database, a PSA now airing nationally, or the ability to keep pressure on companies that would rather stay invisible — happens without people willing to fund it.
As we mark four years since Highland Park, will you help us take the next steps?
Every step we take puts us one step closer to saving lives.
In solidarity,
